Help protect Circular Head from invasive weeds

Circular Head Council is looking for a practical and motivated Weeds Management Officer to coordinate and deliver Council’s statutory and operational weed management program across the municipality. This part-time position is 18.75 hours per week and suits someone who can combine field knowledge, planning, compliance and community engagement to achieve effective weed management outcomes.

You will identify, prioritise, control and monitor declared environmental and other priority weeds on Council-managed land, roadsides and priority locations. From field inspections and weed mapping to coordinating control works and working with landholders, this role offers the opportunity to directly protect our environment and reduce the spread of invasive weeds.

Located in Tasmania’s far north west, Circular Head is known for its spectacular coastline, productive rural industries and strong sense of community. About the role

The Weeds Management Officer is responsible for coordinating Council’s weed management activities across the Circular Head municipality with a strong focus on field surveillance, operational control, compliance, monitoring and prevention. This is a part-time position working 18.75 hours per week.

You will work across Council-managed land, roadsides and priority sites, investigate weed reports and complaints, maintain accurate mapping and treatment records, provide practical advice and support coordinated weed management across property and tenure boundaries.

In this role, you will:

•  Undertake field inspections, surveillance and identification of declared, environmental and priority weeds and investigate weed complaints and reports.

•  Plan, prioritise and deliver risk-based weed management programs, including on-ground control, follow-up treatment and site-specific weed management plans.

•  Provide technical direction where required, and monitor completed works for quality and effectiveness.

•  Record, map and monitor infestations, treatments and outcomes using Council mapping and information systems and maintain accurate follow-up records.

•  Provide practical advice, undertake appropriate compliance activities and build partnerships with landholders, Biosecurity Tasmania, Cradle Coast NRM and other stakeholders

About you

You are practical, organised and confident working both independently in the field and collaboratively with others. You can identify weed risks, prioritise work, communicate clearly with landholders and stakeholders, follow issues through from inspection to treatment, monitoring and reporting.

You bring sound judgement and self-management skills and you are comfortable balancing operational work, regulatory responsibilities, contractor coordination and accurate record keeping.

Ideally, you will have:

•  A minimum Certificate IV in Horticulture, Conservation and Ecosystem Management, Natural Resources, Environmental Management or a related discipline, or substantial relevant weed management experience.

•  Practical experience in weed identification, assessment, control and monitoring, including knowledge of Tasmanian declared, environmental and priority weeds and appropriate control methods.

•  Knowledge of the Biosecurity Act 2019 and the ability to undertake field inspections, landholder engagement and compliance or regulatory activities in a practical and professional way.

•  Strong data recording, mapping and work-program coordination skills, including Microsoft Office, relevant GIS or mapping systems, scheduling, contractor coordination and reporting.

•  A current driver’s licence, strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to obtain Working with Vulnerable People registration and a National Police Check.

Salary and Benefits

This part-time position is 18.75 hours per week and is classified at Level 3, Grade 1-5 - $38,608.90 – $41,214.21 per annum (0.5 FTE) , under the Circular Head Council Enterprise Agreement, PLUS super and a range of benefits including:
