Lead the people, programs and partnerships that keep Council’s buildings safe, compliant and ready to serve the community

Banyule City Council is seeking an experienced and people focused Building Maintenance Coordinator to lead the team responsible for maintaining Council’s diverse portfolio of buildings and facilities. This is a senior operational leadership role with genuine scope to influence service quality, strengthen compliance and risk management, and lead a capable, accountable and customer focused team.

About the role and what you’ll do

Reporting to the Manager Delivery and Assets, you will provide clear operational leadership across planned, preventative and reactive maintenance; essential safety measures and statutory compliance; contractor performance; budgets and resources; building-related risk; and responsive service delivery. Your leadership will help ensure Council buildings remain safe, accessible, sustainable and serviceable. You’ll support the delivery of vital Council and community services by:

  • Lead and support the Building Maintenance team to deliver Council’s scheduled and reactive building maintenance programs safely, efficiently and with a strong customer focus.
  • Maintaining oversight of building compliance, operational risks, contractors, budgets and service priorities.
  • Providing clear technical and operational advice, support effective decision-making, and keep the Manager Delivery and Assets informed of emerging issues, priorities and program performance.
  • Planning and overseeing planned, preventative and reactive maintenance across a complex building portfolio.
  • Identify and manage building-related safety, compliance, operational, financial and service risks.
  • Procure and manage contractors, consultants and service providers, driving strong performance, quality, safety and value for money.
  • Use asset and service information to strengthen planning, reporting, prioritisation and continuous improvement.
  • Build trusted relationships with internal teams, facility users, community organisations, regulators and service partners.

This role is part of Banyule’s Leadership Network – you’ll have opportunities to grow your skills and experience of leadership and develop your skills as an organisational leader beyond your role-based expertise.

About you (what you'll bring/what we are looking for)

You are a practical, credible and collaborative leader who can balance day-to-day service demands with longer-term asset, safety and compliance priorities. You communicate complex matters clearly, make sound evidence-based decisions and create the conditions for your team and service partners to perform at their best. You will have:

1. A relevant tertiary qualification in building, engineering, construction, facilities management, asset management or a related discipline, or substantial relevant experience in a senior building maintenance, facilities or infrastructure coordination role.

2. Demonstrated ability to lead, support and develop a technical or operational team, including setting clear expectations, managing performance, building capability and fostering a safe, inclusive and accountable workplace culture.

3. Demonstrated experience coordinating planned, preventative and reactive maintenance across a complex building or facilities portfolio, with sound knowledge of essential safety measures, relevant building compliance requirements, occupational health and safety and risk management.

4. Demonstrated experience managing contractors, consultants, procurement activities and service contracts, together with strong financial management capability, including budget planning, forecasting, expenditure monitoring and cost control.

5. Demonstrated ability to analyse complex building and service issues, manage competing priorities, make sound evidence-based decisions and develop practical responses that balance safety, compliance, service continuity, customer impact, cost and value for money.

6. Highly developed written, verbal and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to provide clear and impartial advice, prepare high-quality reports and recommendations, manage expectations and build constructive relationships with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
